Risks of Being Overweight
One question that you might ask yourself is what are the risks in being overweight? There are many health problems that you could develop:Heart Disease: The most serious of all health problems. The risk of chest pain, congestive heart failure, heart attacks and even sudden cardiac death are all increased in overweight people. Adults who are overweight are twice as likely to have high blood pressure compared to those at a healthy weight.
Stroke: Two of the leading causes of stroke are poor diet and physical inactivity. Diets high in saturated fat, high in cholesterol, or with execess calories can lead to a stroke. The risk of having a stroke is also increased with high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol or simply being inactive.
Diabetes: Type 2 Diabetes (sometimes called Diabetes mellitus type 2) is characterized primarily by insulin resistance, insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia. More than 80% of people with diabetes are overweight. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes can be reduced by both losing weight and increasing your physical activity
Cancer: Colon, gallbladder, kidney, prostate & post-menopausal breast are all possible types of cancer that are increased in people who are overweight.
Sleep Apnea: Overweight people are more likely to have a disruption of breathing while they are asleep, also known as sleep apnea. Studies show that 90% of people with sleep apnea don't even know they have it! This common disorder can be life-threatening if not treated.
Gallbladder Disease: This disease is more common if you are overweight and the risk of the disease is increased as your weight increases.
