How is this determined? The Harris Benedict formula uses your weight, height, age, and sex to determine your basal metabolic rate (BMR), a measure of how many calories you would burn if you just slept all day long.

The Harris-Benedict Equation
Men: 66.5 + (13.75 x W) + (5.003 x H) - (6.775 x Age) = BMR
Women: 665.1 + (9.563 x W) + (1.85 x H) - (4.676 x Age) = BMR

Where:
W = weight in Kgs
H = Height in cms
Age = Years

Next, You can calculate the number of calories you burn in a day by multiplying your BMR by an factor based on the following:
  • Little/No Exercise - BMR x 1.2
  • Lightly Active (1-3 days/week) - BMR x 1.375
  • Moderately Active (3-5 days/week) - BMR x 1.55
  • Very Active (6-7 days/week) - BMR x 1.725
  • Extra Active (Physical Job or Double Training) - BMR x 1.9
